What is a Gas Compliance Certificate?

If you’ve just installed a new gas oven or you're trying to sell your house, you’ve probably been asked for a Gas Compliance Certificate. It might look like just another piece of paperwork, but it’s actually your "safety guarantee".

Basically, this certificate is proof that your gas work was done by a licensed professional and meets every safety law in the book. It’s your "get out of jail free" card for insurance claims and the first thing a bank asks for during a house sale. Without it, you’re on the hook for any DIY disasters or cowboy plumbing jobs.

What Exactly is a Gas Compliance Certificate?

Think of a Gas Compliance Certificate as a safety guarantee for your gas work. It’s a formal document issued by a licensed gas fitter (like us) that proves the job was done by a pro, tested for leaks, and is 100% up to Australian Standards.

If you can’t produce a compliance certificate, you’re essentially uninsured. If there’s ever a fire or a leak, your insurance company will look for any reason to walk away from a claim. Without that paper, you’re handing them a reason on a silver platter. It’s a massive risk just to save a few bucks on a cashie job.

When Do You Legally Need a Gas Compliance Certificate?

You can’t just "wing it" when it comes to gas. In Australia, the law is pretty black and white: anytime a gas system is installed, altered, or extended, you need a certificate.

It’s not just for big renovations, either. You’ll need a Gas Compliance Certificate for:

âś… New Gas Appliance Installations

Even if you’re just replacing an old gas oven or cooktop with a newer model, it needs to be certified.

âś… Gas Hot Water Systems

Swapping out an old gas hot water unit for a new one.

âś… New Gas Lines

Running a new pipe for an outdoor BBQ or a gas heater.

âś… Gas Meter Upgrades

If the gas company has to move or upgrade your meter, the house lines usually need a fresh look.

âś… Gas Conversions

If you’re switching your home from LPG bottles to Natural Gas (or vice-versa).

If a wrench has touched a gas pipe or a fitting has been tightened, you should be asking for a certificate. If a tradie tells you "it’s just a small job, you don't need the paperwork", that’s a massive red flag. 🚩🚩🚩

It’s also worth noting that if you’re selling or renting out your home, your real estate agent or conveyancer will likely go through your files looking for these. If they’re missing, it can delay your settlement and cost you a fortune in last minute inspections.

⚠️ Don't Fall for the "Invoice Trick"

🚨 Here’s a big one: An invoice is not a Gas Compliance Certificate. If a tradie tells you, "Your invoice acts as your certificate," they are either mistaken or lying‼️

A real certificate is a specific, numbered document that we lodge with the authorities. It has our license number on it and acts as your legal safety net. If you don't get that specific document, you haven't been certified.

What Happens if You Don’t Have a Compliance Cert?

Without that piece of paper, you’re essentially flying blind. If something goes wrong, even if it’s not your fault, missing a certificate causes you heaps of trouble:

‼️ Insurance Might Walk Away: If there’s a fire or a leak, insurers look for an “out”. No certificate? They can argue the work was illegal and leave you to foot the bill.

‼️ Voided Warranties: If your new $3,000 oven breaks and you can't prove a licensed professional installed it, the manufacturer will likely void your warranty on the spot.

‼️ Safety Gambles: The certificate is your proof that the lines were pressure tested. Without it, you’re betting your safety on a guy who couldn't be bothered to do the paperwork.

‼️ Fines and Meter Pulls: Authorities can fine you for "unauthorised work" and even pull your gas meter until a licensed pro fixes and certifies the whole system from scratch.

Saving fifty bucks by using a 'mate' is the fastest way to end up spending thousands later! You’ll have to pay someone like me to rip it out and do it properly just so you can sell your house. It’s simply not worth the gamble.

Can Any Plumber Sign a Gas Cert Off?

In short? No. Just because someone is a great plumber doesn't mean they are a licensed gas fitter.

In the trade world, gas is a completely different "class" of license. It’s a bit like doctors: you wouldn't ask a podiatrist to check your heart just because they both went to med school.

To legally sign off on a Gas Compliance Certificate, a tradie must:

✔️ Be Nationally Accredited

✔️ Be Insured for Gas

✔️ Be Registered with the Authorities

⚠️ The "Handyman" Trap

You’ll often find handymen or "all rounder" tradies who are happy to swap an oven for a slab of beer. They might be handy with a wrench, but they can’t give you the legal paperwork. If they can't provide a certificate with their license number on it, the work is technically illegal, and you’re the one left with the risk.

Always ask to see the back of their license card. If it doesn't say 'Gas Fitting' or 'Type A Appliance,' they shouldn't be touching your pipes.

The Difference Between a Certificate and a Safety Check

It’s easy to confuse the two, but they do very different jobs for your home. One is about the paperwork; the other is about your peace of mind.

The Compliance Certificate

The certificate proves that a new appliance or pipe was installed correctly on a specific date. It’s a legal requirement, but it doesn't tell you how that appliance is performing five years later.

The Gas Safety Check

This is like a logbook service for your car. We test your entire system, old and new, to make sure nothing has perished, rusted, or started leaking over time. We use specialised tools to find tiny leaks and test for deadly Carbon Monoxide.

What the Cost of a Gas Compliance Certificate?

The certificate itself is usually a small administrative fee (often under $50), but it’s rarely a standalone cost. Because the plumber is legally signing their name to the safety of the work, the price is generally bundled into the job.

Selling or Renting? Don't Let Your Settlement Get Stuck!

If you’re moving house, your to-do list is already a mile long. But missing gas paperwork is one of the fastest ways to kill a deal.

Nowadays, conveyancers and banks are onto it. If a buyer’s inspector spots a newish cooktop or hot water unit but there’s no Gas Compliance Certificate in your files, it’ll set off alarm bells.

⌛ Settlement Delays: Banks can, and do, hold up a buyer’s finance until they see proof the gas work is legal.

💲 Last Minute Costs: If you can’t find yours, you’ll have to pay for a fresh inspection and pressure test just to get the sign-off. It’s a stress you don't need on moving day.

⚖️ Landlord Laws: For rentals, you’re legally on the hook for gas safety. No certificate means you’re wide open to fines and insurance rejections if a leak occurs.
